The Chinese Lunar Year

After 60 Years, the Year of the Fire Horse has Recurred!

The Chinese new year is the annual 15-day Chinese festival that commences with the new moon that takes place between January 21st and February 20th. This year it commenced on February 17th, the first day of the Lunar New Year, and will conclude on March 3rd.

For the first time in sixty years, the Year of the Fire Horse has returned. For Barbados, this isn’t just a coincidence of the Chinese Zodiac and it is a cosmic mirror of our national identity. The Chinese zodiac consists of 12 animals: a rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, and 5 elements; water, fire, wood, metal and earth.

In the 60-year cycle of elements and animals, the last Fire Horse year was in 1966 when Barbados gained its independence from Great Britain and ended 361 years of British rule to become a sovereign state within the Commonwealth.

The Horse symbolizes freedom and speed, while Fire brings intensity and urgency. In ’66, that energy was used to build a nation. According to Chinese astrology, this Fire Horse year, which will end on February 5th 2027, is predicted to be a year of energy that symbolises passion, change and transformation.

2026 is a ‘Double Fire’ year and a rare alignment where both the year’s element and the animal itself burn with the same intensity as the Horse is a fire sign. The Fire Horse is known for rewarding the brave and punishing the hesitant. If you believe in astrology and you need a sign to be brave and courageous and follow your passions, this is your sign.

Think about our heroes who didn’t wait a second when it was time for independence. As Errol Barrow once asked us to look at our own mirror image, the year of the Fire Horse is asking the business owners, the students, everyone across the island with a dream, “are you going to hesitate or are you going to go for it.”
