As Barbados charges forward with its year-long “On the Road to 60” celebrations, honoring six decades of independence and its vibrant journey as a parliamentary republic, the nation’s literary community has stepped directly into the spotlight.
Last evening, against the backdrop of the Radisson Aquatica Resort, acclaimed author, publisher, and founder of Passionate Words Editing Services, Robert Gibson, officially launched the media campaign for the upcoming Mega Book Launch. Scheduled for November 22nd, 2026, the cultural showcase will center around the theme: “Ink, Identity, and Independence: A Celebration of Caribbean Literary Excellence.”

In a year deeply rooted in the national theme, “Gathering as One Nation,” the media launch put a sharp focus on the vital intersection of national identity and youth literacy. Addressing the attendees, Gibson passionately argued that a nation’s ultimate strength relies on the literacy of its younger generations.
“Children don’t read much, actually lots of people don’t read much at all these days… and I really want to change that with the Mega Book Launch,” Gibson stated candidly. “I don’t want the literacy rate to go down. Literacy is the basis for everything else. Reading helps with comprehension and critical thinking. If you don’t read, then to be fair… we’re gonna have a lot of dumpsy people about the place, and I can’t have that.”

The upcoming November showcase aims to be a cornerstone of the independence anniversary festivities. Moving far beyond traditional, passive author readings, the event is designed to foster deep, interactive literary engagement for families and students across the island.
The decision to anchor the main event in November was a deliberate nod to Barbadian heritage. Ashley Philips Kinch, Managing Director of Bijou Media, highlighted the strategic timing and the deeper mission behind the initiative.

“The reason for November was we wanted to support local authors. We wanted to merge Independence and our authors into one month,” Philips Kinch explained. “We have been working with local authors and I found there is simply not enough visibility. We are really proud to be Barbadian, aren’t we? As authors and readers, we need to support each other.”
For the writers involved, the Mega Book Launch represents a long-awaited breakthrough for homegrown creativity. Featured author KathyAnn Best shared her enthusiasm for the platform’s potential to unite communities.

“This initiative provides authors with something we all need: an opportunity,” said Best. “An opportunity to showcase our work, connect with readers, and remind our communities that there is incredible talent right here in Barbados. I believe that every setback can become a setup for growth, every scar becomes a story of survival, and every experience can teach us something valuable.”
Adding to the excitement, featured author Isa Went urged the public to rally behind the local creative economy and teased exclusive surprises for attendees.

“Support… support authors, support the vision,” Went enthused. “Come to the Mega Book Launch…it’s gonna be great, it’s gonna be fun! I have a surprise for you which I won’t reveal yet, but Robert and I are working on a bunch of stuff. Come out on November 22nd, 2026. I will sign your book… FOR SURE!”
