August 30 Named as Edwin Yearwood Day in New York

Soca Titan Edwin Yearwood a classic Calypso and Soca Music artist.

While Calypso and Soca Music still thrives, August 30th will officially be known as Edwin Yearwood day in New York City. The Soca General received recognition of that following his superb performances at Labour Day celebrations and  over the year in New York City. While speaking to News On The Go’s Kerry Skeete at CARIFESTA XV’s Closing Ceremony just last Sunday, Yearwood said that he enjoys “making people happy”

“I can’t be a sad sap going on stage to make people happy and it is a passion of mine to keep people happy, to make people happy. To write positive lyrics and to perform positive lyrics. I just have that bubbly positive spirit and that’s what takes me on stage,” he said.

The renowned artist was celebrated for his significant contributions to Caribbean music and culture.

Edwin Yearwood is a true titan of Barbadian soca music. As the lead singer of the popular band Krosfyah and a hugely successful solo artist, his influence is undeniable. He’s best known for pioneering a unique fusion of soca with other genres like calypso and reggae. His innovation helped shape the modern sound of Caribbean music.

Throughout his career, Yearwood has earned an impressive collection of awards, including multiple Party Monarch, People’s Monarch, and Road March titles at the famous Barbados Crop Over festival. In 1995, he made history by winning the Calypso Monarch, Party Monarch, and Tune of the Crop Monarch in a single year.
