Beneath grey, overcast skies that mirror the mood of a grieving nation,
Barbados laid to rest the Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers.
A loss this island has mourned over the past several days for a National Hero
who not only put Barbados on the global stage, showcasing the incredible
talent this nation can produce, but who also embodied the dignity and strength
we as an island possess.
His impact is evident in the crowds who rallied to attend his public viewing and
in the many who gathered today to bid him a final farewell. As the procession
unfolded, the atmosphere was one of reflection and gratitude, with thousands
coming together to honour a man whose legacy extends far beyond the cricket
field.
The speeches delivered in his remembrance all shared one common theme.
They spoke of his humility despite his immense contributions. They
remembered him not only as a cricketing legend, but as a father, a friend, and
a mentor to many.
Sir Gary will always be remembered as an example of what this great little
island can produce, someone who despite all of his achievements, remained
grounded, with a heart and mindset filled with dignity and humility.
Beautiful tributes from his children, Daniel and Matthew Sobers, remembered
him as a man whose “greatness was never to be questioned, but rather
respected.”
Prime Minister the Right Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, S.C., M.P., also
delivered a touching tribute, speaking of Sir Gary’s nurturing yet competitive
nature as she recalled their many games of dominoes.
When reflecting on the legacy Sir Gary leaves behind, the Prime Minister said
it could best be summarised in the words of legendary Barbadian musician Sir
Charles Emile Straker: “When a man good, he good, and when a man great,
he great.
She later thanked Sir Gary for the lasting impact he had on both her life and
the nation, saying, “Sir Garry, our hero, a man who guided me; thank you for
teaching us that greatness could wear humility, that excellence could still
belong to ordinary people and that the dreams of a little boy from Bay Land
could become the inheritance of an entire nation.”
As Barbados says farewell to one of its greatest sons, Sir Gary’s legacy will
continue to inspire generations to come, reminding us that true greatness is
measured not only by achievement, but by the humility with which it is carried.
