National Organisation of Women Elects New Executive and Celebrates Two Years of Impact

The National Organisation of Women (NOW) Barbados held its Biennial General Meeting on Saturday, June 6, 2026, under the theme “From Advocacy to Action – Transforming Voices into Impact.”

During the meeting, members reflected on the organisation’s work over the past two years and elected a new Executive Committee to serve from 2026 to 2028.

The newly elected Executive is:

President: Melissa Savoury-Gittens
Vice President: Roshanna Trim
Secretary: Stacy Ann Charles
Treasurer: Jennifer Clarke
Public Relations Officer: Myah Sam

In her report, President Melissa Savoury-Gittens highlighted several achievements during the 2024–2026 term, emphasizing the organisation’s commitment to moving beyond awareness and advocacy to meaningful community action.

Among the accomplishments highlighted were the successful execution of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, including the highly visible NOW on the Move (M.O.V.E.) Community Bus Tour, which brought awareness messages directly into communities across Barbados.The organisation also strengthened partnerships with a number of stakeholders and community groups, including the Bureau of Gender Affairs, affiliate organisations, government agencies, private sector entities and civil society partners.Particular emphasis was placed on outreach to young women, through a number of partnerships.The President further reported that NOW welcomed the return of former affiliate organisations while also engaging with new women’s groups interested in joining the organisation, reflecting growing confidence in the organisation’s work and mission.Other notable initiatives included educational programmes on women’s rights and gender equality, participation in national consultations and policy discussions, community outreach activities, and support for vulnerable women and families.As the organisation enters a new term, NOW reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for women’s rights, promoting gender equality, supporting community development and strengthening collaboration among women’s organisations across Barbados.Returning President Savoury-Gittens thanked members, affiliates, sponsors, volunteers and partners for their continued support, noting that the organisation’s successes were made possible through collective effort and shared commitment to improving the lives of women and girls.
