UWI Cave Hill Guild Elections Demonstrate Free and Fair Democratic Process

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus recently concluded its annual Guild Elections, a resounding success showcasing its commitment to a free and fair democratic process. The election, a cornerstone of student governance, allows students to elect representatives to the Guild Council, a vital arm of the university’s administration.

This year’s election was marked by an exceptional effort from the Guild Elections Office, headed by Guild Returning Officer Rohan Raghoobar, to enhance student participation and engagement. Initiatives such as “Guild Unlocked: Inside the Leadership” and “From Guild to Greatness” provided valuable insights into the roles and responsibilities of student leaders, inspiring many to step forward.

The election process was meticulously organized, featuring candidate workshops, photo days, and a “60-second podcast” series. This podcast collaborated with the Guild Publications Committee, chaired by Mr. Ohzaki Joseph, ensuring transparency and accessibility for all students. Debate nights held on March 10th and 11th drew crowds of over 350, allowing candidates to present their platforms and engage in robust discussions.

On election day, students cast their votes at 11 polling stations, both on and off campus. The counting process, overseen by counting agents from each candidate, ensured accuracy and impartiality.
