The 41st Barbados International Hockey Festival held from August 23 to 29, 2026 at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex came to a close after a week of fast-paced hockey, international competition and camaraderie on the island. Thanks to the Barbados Hockey Federation the festival welcomed teams from the Caribbean and beyond, including Germany and the United Kingdom, to compete across Men’s, Women’s, Mixed and Masters categories.
True to its reputation for balancing good hockey, good sportsmanship and good social events, the festival gave players and supporters opportunities to unwind, connect and experience the best of Barbados’ culture, hospitality, food and entertainment beyond the competition. The social calendar of events included a welcome social, games night, karaoke event, glass bottom boat ride, a party cruise, and two festival fetes. For many local and international participants, these moments of fellowship were just as memorable as the matches themselves.
Deacons hockey team, managed by Marcus Green, took home the winner’s trophy for this year’s tournament despite this being their first time entering the competition. Green proudly praised his team and made special mention of outstanding players Shane Warner and goal keeper Dario Greenidge. Green also encouraged support from corporate Barbados to assist athletes in reaching success. “Some of the most talented persons in any sport, not just hockey, come from areas that are usually looked down upon, such as Deacons. Corporate Barbados should definitely get behind these kinds of teams. I’d like to say thanks to the sponsor MJA Distributions.“
With sports tourism on the rise in Barbados, these moments of teams from across the world sharing the field and social spaces, the festival once again demonstrated the power of sport to bring people together. As the sticks are packed away and visiting teams prepare to leave the island, the 41st edition of the International Hockey Festival leaves behind more than scores and results—it leaves memories, friendships and another chapter in Barbados’ rich hockey tradition.
Strong local teams that made their presence felt were the Rockets, All Stars, UWI Blackbirds, CATS Hockey Club, Du Badd and the winning team Deacons, as they each showcased great skill and resilience against many competitive teams throughout the tournament. There is no doubt that relationships within the local, regional, and even international hockey community have strengthened, preparing the way for an even greater International Hockey Festival in 2027.
